The large, powerful dual headlights, the large central air intake,
the large lion head motif and integrated rear lights makes this
a distinct sibling of next years version of the hugely successful
RSV Mille. It will be available in red/orange, black, white and,
for those who really want to stand out, SpiderMan colours. In the
UK, there'll be two options; the "R Factory" DiTech engine
(available only in white) and the base "R" conventional
carburettor engine (other colours). The base "R" is otherwise
just the same as the "R Factory".
The steel frame is a new more rigid design and the
weight distribution has been brought forward to a 2% more bias over
the front wheel which, together with the 13" wheels and low
profile 130/60 tyres, results in a shift to a more sport motorcycle
type riding experience.
Probably the most significant innovation is the
refinement in Aprilia's DiTech technology. The reliability has been
improved to the point that they have doubled the maintenance interval
from 3,750 miles to 7,500 miles, which is obviously a significant
saving of running costs. On the subject of costs, the fuel consumption
has been improved to a claimed maximum of 141 mpg and a range of
185 miles. And there's a 60% reduction in oil consumption, making
it overall one of the lowest emission vehicles on the road as well
as being ready for the Euro3 regulations due in 2006.
Overall performance has been improved through developments
in the electronic fuel injection system, especially at low speed
and partial throttle openings. Power delivery is smooth and progressive,
and from a 100 metre standing start, the Aprilia SR 50 Factory will
out accelerate all traditionally engined scooters. Starting should
be perfect every time, even at very low temperatures.
The electronic control system is completely incorporated
into the dashboard which connected to an advanced "K line"
allowing for detailed computerized self-diagnosis of all elements
of the electrical system including the engine. The dash has every
piece of information you could possibly need including average and
maximum speeds, with the displays sensibly controlled from the handlebars.
Also included is an electronic immobiliser.
Also new is an additional 1 litre compartment for
small things like mobile phones.
UK stock will be arriving mid November.
